Mildenhall hosts its biggest tri festival in 2018!

Mildenhall hosted it's biggest triathlon festival to date in 2018, with almost double the number of competitors as in the inaugural event two years earlier!

Some 179 athletes completed the distance in their choice of triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon on Sunday 26 August in the Abbeycroft Leisure Triathlon Festival.

Starting with a dip in Mildenhall Swimming Pool, athletes then had a fast, flat cycle out through Lakenheath and West Row, passing the air bases, before a scenic run through Barton Mills and along the River Lark.

Clinton Butcher won the Sprint triathlon (300 metre swim, 21 kilometre cycle, 5km run) in one hour twominutes 18 seconds, with the first lady home Tansy Challis in 1.12.59. Both the men's and women's course records were broken as that distance wa doubled in the Sprint+ event, with Paul Ruffy the first to complete the distance in 1.49.36, and Stephanie Lundeby beting her own 2017course record to win in 2.04.15.

Those who did not fancy a swim completed the duathlon, with the Sprint race a 5km run, 21km cycle and a second 5km run, with the Sprint+ completing two laps on their first run and on the bike. Lee Imrie was first to cross the line in the shorter event in 1.14.47, with Ellie Kershaw topping the podium for the ladies in 1.35.15. Daniel Wilson won in the Sprint+ race in 2.13.04, with Joanna Carr the first woman to cross the line in 2.33.42.

Youngsters from aged eight and above also competed across a variety of distances in the auathlon (swim and run), with several adults opting for this race too.

The race was again held in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

"Mildenhall is a lovely venue, with some fast racing opportunities and some really enjoyable scenary back along the river," said HaverSports director Jack Tappin.

"It's great that we've been able to grow this event, building on the success of April's St Eds' Tri, and see so many athletes come to Mildenhall to share in what we believe is a fantastic course. I'd like to thank our sponsors, Abbeycroft Leisure, our marshals who volunteered for this event, but mostly our athletes who turned out in numbers to make this event possibe. We look forward to delivering a bigger and better Mildenhall Tri in 2019, and hope to see these competitors at HaverTri in October!"
